Water filters are used to remove impurities from water for various purposes. They are typically used to purify drinking water. Filters are also used for irrigation purposes. They are also used for agricultural purpose, aquariums and swimming pools. There are several different processes used to cleanse water. Some of these systems use a sieve apparatus to separate impurities from the water. There are other processes that use ion exchanges to clean the water.

The commonly used systems for cleaning water are media filtration, screens, disks, slow sand and rapid sand filtration and cloth filters. Media filters use sand or crushed rocks to filter out the impurities from drinking water. This system is also used to clean pool water and stormwater systems. Most city drinking water systems use this method of filtration. Layers of sand are used to filter the water. Impurities are left behind and the water becomes safe for human consumption.

Screen filters use mesh, stainless steel screens to separate impurities from water. This does not get all of the impurities from the water. This method is typically used for irrigation purposes or for industrial use. Water that contains organic substances do not generally use the screen method. Such impurities can easily pass through the screens.

Slow sand filters are also used to purify water. They differ from other filtration systems in that they use biological systems to cleanse water. Slow sand filters do not utilize chemicals to treat the water. The purification system uses scraping mechanism to filter the top layers of the water.

A less sophisticated method of water purification is the cloth filter method. Large piece of cloth are dragged in rivers or ponds to separate impurities from the water. This process is used to provide safe drinking water. It is not as effective or safe as the slow sand filtration method but it does make the water suitable for drinking if it is done properly. Many pathogens are removed from the water. This process of filtration is done in less developed countries that do not have modern filtration systems in the poorer regions.

There are several different types of water filtration systems that are made for home use. Some of these systems are called point of use filters. There are water filters that can fit over a kitchen sink. There are other systems developed for showerheads. Some offer more filtration than others such as multi barrier systems. There are also ceramic filters or jugs that filter only a little bit of water for drinking purposes.

Portable water filters are also available. These are commonly used by those in the military. Or individuals that spend a lot of time trekking in the outdoors. The portable systems use a pump to pump out the impurities from the water. The impurities are separated into a tube and removed from the water making it safe to drink. This manual pumps remove such items as bacteria, microbes and protozoa.

There have been many different forms of water filters that have been used throughout history. Ancient Egypt is known to have develop the first water filtration systems. The first modern systems were used during the early 1900s. The slow sand filtration system was the commonly used method for purifying drinking water. Chemicals are not added during this process. It is a natural form of water filtration that removes a high percentage of impurities from the water. There are many other processes that are used dependant upon how the water will be utilized.
